The Power of Youth Media: How Ugandan Youth Are Shaping the Narrative

By Richardson Kyeyune (Chief)

Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world β€” with over 75% of its citizens under the age of 30. Yet for too long, youth voices have been sidelined in national conversations. At iTV, we believe it’s time to flip the script. Young people should not only be seen; they should be heard, spotlighted, and empowered. That’s why youth are at the very heart of what we do.

🎀 Youth as Creators, Not Just Consumers

Most media platforms treat young people as passive audiences β€” chasing likes, memes, and trends. But at iTV, we believe the youth are not just followers of culture β€” they are creators of it. From producing shows to hosting podcasts, from digital editing to street reporting, young Ugandans are using media to question, express, and lead.

Through shows like The Youth Angle, we give youth a platform to speak on everything β€” from education and unemployment, to identity, relationships, mental health, politics, and innovation.

🌱 Why Youth Media Matters

  1. It reflects real experiences
Young people speak the language of their peers. When they take the mic, the message becomes relatable, raw, and real.
  2. It builds confidence and leadership
Creating content helps youth find their voice, build skills, and gain confidence in their ability to lead change.
  3. It drives social change
From climate action to gender equality, youth media has the power to shift public opinion, organize movements, and challenge systems.
  4. It inspires other youth
When one young person tells their story, it can light a fire in thousands more. Youth media multiplies impact.

πŸ“Ί What iTV Is Doing Differently

At iTV, youth aren’t just featured β€” they’re running the show. Our team includes young journalists, producers, designers, and presenters. We create space for youth to learn, experiment, fail, rise, and shine.

We provide media training, mentorship, and access to tools so that youth from all backgrounds β€” even those with no formal education β€” can become storytellers and thought leaders.

We are not building a platform for the youth. We are building it with them.

πŸ“‘ From the Street to the Studio

Whether it’s a boda rider with an opinion, a girl with a startup idea, or a student with a bold vision, iTV is committed to finding and amplifying young voices that are shaping Uganda’s future.

Because if we want a better tomorrow, we must listen to those who will live in it.
